History of the dojo

What is Zazen?

Simply put,  Zazen is seated zen.  Zen is a method by which an individual learns to remove discursive or intellectualizing thought.  The aim of Zen is to discover reality as it truly is and not as we "think" it is.  The pedagogy of Zen is ideal for the martial artist because of its non-intellectualizing property is also typical of Aikido training.  The practice of Zen in Aikido serves to help students focus their mind and progress towards a more introspective approach to their martial training.  We attach no religious aspect to our Zazen.

Person doing ZazenHow do you do Zazen?
To start doing Zazen you can bring a cushion(zafu) to sit on and a blanket or a large, thin, square pillow(zabuton).  The dojo has some zafu and zabuton for you to use but it is best to bring your own.  The instructor will ring the bell which signifies the beginning of the Zazen period.   Before attending, the instructor will go over the details of sitting with you and how to breath.  But generally speaking, you sit in full-lotus position with just little of your buttocks on the zafu (see the picture) with your back straight and head pulled back with ears in line with your shoulders.   Next your hands are placed in the cosmic mudra position and you simply sit and breath.
